The Gadsden flag is named after American General Christopher Gadsden who designed it in 1775 during the American Revolution. It was used by the first Marines depicting a coiled rattlesnake with thirteen rattles along with the motto "Don't Tread on Me" to symbolize the 13 original colonies protecting their liberties.
